During Miles Davis' most melodic era, the conception of Sketches Of Spain emerged as one of his most accessible albums, breaking free from the traditional constraints of jazz. Collaborating with Gil Evans, Davis crafted a rich orchestral sound, departing from his usual improvisational style.
Drawing inspiration from Spanish melodies such as El Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquín Rodrigo and El Amor Brujo by Manuel de Falla, Davis and Evans painted a vivid musical portrait of Spain. Despite being unfamiliar territory for Davis, he embraced the challenge, stating, "It's music, and I like it."
